"Silver Things" Movie Article (Q&A)


1. What was Russell's purpose in creating this film?
David O. Russell's hit film, Silver Linings Playbook, was originally a gift for his son, Matthew, 18, who has bipolar disorder.

2. Why is making a film about mental illness tricky?
Because a lot of things can get wrong, and the viewers can have a different view about how you wanted it to. But a film about mental illness can have a cathartic effect on the viewers allowing them to experience strong emotions through an activity.

In the Article Russell says. "His father has OCD. The girlfriend has issues, and the sister-in-law has issues. Even his best friend has issues. All the characters are grappling with something. I wanted to show that we're all in this together." 

3. Why is it important to try to get rid of the stigma around mental illness? 
it can lead to shame and self-consciousness in people who have a mental illness
